German Christmas Market
Nothing gets you in the Christmas mood quicker than an evening stroll around a beautiful, atmospheric German Christmas Market. Not to be confused with a hectic dash around the supermarkets, trying to grab last minute items for the Christmas Dinner, Edinburgh's German Christmas Market is brilliant.
One of the largest in the UK it does all the traditional German fare really well; delicious Glühwein to sip and savour as you browse through unique handmade decorations and artisan crafts.
Succulent grilled sausages to feed the family and yummy lebkuchen (a gingerbread like treat) to please the sweet tooth topped offed with the lovely scents of cinnamon candles.
Being Scotland, the chilly temperatures only add to the occasion and of course looking up to the castle through the snow is as romantic as it gets.
The lovely Princes Street Gardens is the setting for the family, festive funfair. Make sure to get your skates on with Europe's largest outdoor ice rink and gracefully glide about on under the gaze of the 100ft high ferris wheel.
Set on the famous Princes Street, take a spectacular trip on the giant wheel and see the beautiful city landscape and the humongous Christmas tree on The Mound lit up in twinkling fairy lights.
With stalls and attractions galore, Edinburgh's Winter Wonderland provides a great family evening during the lead-up to Christmas.
A magical Christmas Concert takes place on Parliament Square, on the Royal Mile. The astounding St Giles' Cathedral Choir holds their yearly concert complete with the amazing Cathedral providing their background scenery.
Equally special is the Edinburgh University Renaissance Singers' annual Christmas concert that celebrates the festive music reminiscent of 16th century Munich.
Great Scottish Santa Run
If you can brave the cold and want to join hundreds of jolly fat men, take part in the Great Scottish Santa Run...or at least come down to watch! Be warned, rosy, red cheeks are a requirement but don't worry the cold or the exercise will make sure you're well covered.
